You'll triage, stabilize, and treat patients across every age and condition — all while staying calm under pressure. It's one of the most challenging and fulfilling roles in the profession.

Emergency nurses triage, stabilize and treat patients of every age with every condition. A single shift can include chest pain, strokes, trauma, pediatric fevers, behavioral health crises and overdoses. You prioritize constantly, start lines quickly, give time-sensitive medications and communicate with families under pressure.
ER experience travels well. It prepares nurses for flight nursing, trauma programs, urgent care, telehealth triage and travel contracts. Most ER nurses add TNCC, PALS and ACLS early, then the CEN once they have experience.
