Required Hours
Complete TWO of three options: 30 contact hours of CE; OR 30 hours of professional nursing activities; OR 320 hours of nursing employment
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; keep documentation for audit. At least 20 of the 30 CE hours must be from an ANCC/ACCME/ACPE-accredited program; no more than 10 hours may be facility in-service.
Renewal Deadline
RN/APRN licenses lapse November 30 of EVEN-numbered years (LPN licenses expire September 30 of even years). Renew online before the deadline.
Required & specialty topics
- You must meet TWO of the three competency options each renewal — they do not have to include CE hours, but most nurses use CE as one of the two.
- APRNs with prescriptive authority: 15 of the 30 contact hours must be in advanced pharmacology / clinical management of drug therapy.
- APRNs renewing DEA registration: 2 hours in pain management and opioid use/addiction.
New & first-time renewals
- Passing the NCLEX during the licensing period can satisfy one of the two required options for your first renewal.
Good to know
- Alaska is NOT a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
- If you cannot document 320 employment hours, a Board-approved refresher course may be required.
