California Nursing CE Requirements

30 contact hours per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked through BreEZe; keep CE certificates for audit. There is no limit on independent / home-study hours.
Renewal Deadline
License expires the last day of your birth month at the end of the two-year cycle. Renew through the BreEZe system.
Required & specialty topics
- Implicit bias: 1 contact hour, one-time, within the first two years of licensure (AB 1407 / BPC 2811.5). Cannot be exempted.
- NPs with prescriptive authority + DEA registration: 3 hours on Schedule II controlled substances and addiction risks (part of the 30).
- NPs in primary care where 25%+ of patients are 65+: a share of CE must be in gerontology / dementia / older-patient care.
New & first-time renewals
- During the first two years after initial licensure you are EXEMPT from the 30-hour requirement — except you must still complete the 1-hour implicit bias training.

- CE must come from a BRN-recognized provider.
