District of Columbia Nursing CE Requirements
Everything District of Columbia RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
24 contact hours per renewal period (RN/APRN; LPNs need 18)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
CE Broker (official; NetCE and others report automatically). Keep records at least 4 years.
Renewal Deadline
DC Health is transitioning to a birth-month/birth-year renewal cycle. Renew through the DC Health online portal; there is a 60-day grace period with a late fee (you may not practice once it ends).
Required & specialty topics
- Public Health Priorities: at least 3 of the 24 hours (10% of total) on topics identified by the DC Director of Health.
- LGBTQ Cultural Competency: 2 of the 24 hours every renewal (D.C. Law 21-95).
- APRNs with prescriptive authority: 15 of the 24 hours in pharmacology related to the specialty.
New & first-time renewals
- Licensees whose renewal period was shortened by the birth-month transition complete 50% of the standard hours, including all mandatory topics.
Good to know
- The Board will not accept any course approved for less than 1.0 contact hour.
- DC is NOT a Nurse Licensure Compact member — a DC-specific license is required (relevant for Maryland/Virginia commuters at DC facilities).
