Illinois Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Illinois RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
20 contact hours per renewal period (RN and LPN)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; no roster submission required. Keep certificates for audit.
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses renew by May 31 of even-numbered years (next: May 31, 2026); LPN licenses renew by January 31, 2027. Renew online through IDFPR.
Required & specialty topics
- These 1-hour topics COUNT toward the 20 (they do not add to it): Sexual Harassment Prevention (1 hr); Implicit Bias Awareness (1 hr); Cultural Competency (1 hr, for renewals on or after January 1, 2025); Alzheimer's/Dementia (1 hr, if you provide care to adults age 26+); Mandated Reporter Training (1 hr, within 3 months of initial licensure and at least every 6 years thereafter).
New & first-time renewals
- The sexual harassment prevention, implicit bias, and cultural competency topic requirements generally do not apply to nurses renewing for the very first time — verify your situation with IDFPR.
Good to know
- APRNs need 50 contact hours per cycle; APRNs with full practice authority / prescriptive authority need 80 hours (including 20 in pharmacotherapeutics, 10 of which on opioids/addiction). DEA-registered APRNs also complete the one-time 8-hour MATE Act training.
