Kansas Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Kansas RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
30 contact hours of continuing nursing education (CNE) per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birth month/year
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; keep certificates for audit. Use a KSBN-approved or nationally recognized (e.g., ANCC) provider.
Renewal Deadline
Licenses expire based on your birth month and odd/even birth year, on a 2-year cycle. Renew online (usually up to 60 days before). No grace period.
Required & specialty topics
- No mandatory CE topics — but CNE must be specific to the practice of nursing (K.S.A. 65-1113/65-1117).
- College courses require a pre-submitted Individual Offering Approval (IOA) form to count, and not all qualify.
New & first-time renewals
- You are NOT required to complete the 30 CNE hours if your license expires within 30 months following your initial licensure exam (or within the first 9 months after reinstatement or endorsement).
Good to know
- Kansas measures in "contact hours"; 1 CEU = 10 contact hours.
- Kansas is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
