Self-tracked; submit certificates only if selected for a CE audit. Use KBN-approved providers.
Renewal Deadline
License renews annually by October 31. The CE earning period runs November 1 – October 31.
Required & specialty topics
- 14 approved contact hours each year; OR 7 contact hours plus a satisfactory nursing employment evaluation (the two options cannot be combined to reach 14).
- Domestic Violence: 3 contact hours, one-time, within 3 years of licensure (if educated outside Kentucky or before May 1998).
- Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma: 1.5 contact hours, one-time (if not covered in your nursing program).
- One-time topic hours for certain nurses: Suicide Prevention (2 hrs), Implicit Bias (1.5 hrs), and Alzheimer's/Dementia (1 hr, due by Oct 31, 2027 for those licensed as of July 15, 2024).
- APRNs: national certification can satisfy the 14-hour RN requirement; APRNs also complete 5 pharmacology hours/year (3 in pain management or addiction if DEA/KASPER-registered).
