Maryland Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Maryland RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
30 contact hours (CEUs) OR 1,000 practice hours / recent degree — a continued-competency choice
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birth month
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; keep documentation for audit. CEUs must be earned in the 2 years immediately before renewal.
Renewal Deadline
Licenses expire on the 28th of your birth month every 2 years. Renew online (you can renew ~90 days before).
Required & specialty topics
- Satisfy continued competency by ONE of: 1,000 hours of active nursing practice in the last 5 years; OR a Board-approved nursing diploma/degree completed in the last 5 years; OR 30 CEUs within the 2 years before renewal (15 CEUs per qualifying college semester hour, grade C+).
- Implicit bias training: a Board-approved course (one-time at first renewal on/after 4/1/2022; confirm whether it now recurs).
New & first-time renewals
- Implicit bias training is required for your FIRST renewal on or after April 1, 2022 (and Maryland has been moving toward a recurring implicit-bias requirement — verify current rules).
Good to know
- Specialty roles carry extra CE: Forensic Nurse Examiners need 16 hours of forensic CE every 2 years; trauma-program and ER/ICU nurses have annual trauma-CE requirements.
- Maryland is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
