Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birthday
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; the Board may request verification at any time. Keep certificates.
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses expire on your birthday in EVEN-numbered years (LPNs in ODD years). Renew online through the MA DPH licensing system (you can usually start ~90 days before).
Required & specialty topics
- Domestic & Sexual Violence: at least 1 of the 15 hours must address this (Chapter 260). Massachusetts provides this course free at chapter260training.org.
- Cognitive Impairment / Alzheimer's & Dementia: a one-time training on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with cognitive impairments (at initial licensure or a renewal).
New & first-time renewals
- Nurses renewing for the very first time are exempt from the 15 contact hours.
Good to know
- Massachusetts is NOT a Nurse Licensure Compact state — a Massachusetts license is required to practice here.
- APRNs complete the same 15 hours and maintain national certification; prescribers have additional opioid/pain requirements under M.G.L. c.94C.
