25 contact hours per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; keep certificates for audit. No more than 12 hours may be earned in any 24-hour period (so you cannot complete all 25 in one sitting).
Renewal Deadline
Licenses renew by March 31 of even-numbered years through the MiPLUS portal.
Required & specialty topics
- Pain & pain symptom management: at least 2 of the 25 hours, every renewal.
- Implicit bias training: 1 hour per year of the license cycle (2 hours for a 2-year renewal).
- Human trafficking: a one-time training (at/before initial licensure) that does NOT count toward the 25 hours.
New & first-time renewals
- If your initial Michigan license was issued on or after May 8, 2024, you MUST complete the full CE (including the mandatory topics) for your first renewal. Nurses licensed before that date were exempt for their first renewal.
Good to know
- Michigan is NOT a Nurse Licensure Compact state — you need a Michigan-issued license to practice here.
- Nurses holding specialty / APRN licenses may have additional requirements.
