Required Hours
No CE required for actively practicing RNs/LPNs (the prior CE rule was repealed in February 2020)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Nothing to submit for a standard renewal; nurses must maintain competency in their own practice area.
Renewal Deadline
RN/APRN licenses expire December 31 of EVEN-numbered years (LPNs in ODD years). Renew online between September 1 and December 31; no grace period.
Required & specialty topics
- There is NO CE requirement to renew an active RN or LPN license.
- EXCEPTION: a nurse who has been out of practice more than 5 years must complete 20 contact hours (earned in the prior 2 years) for renewal, endorsement, or reinstatement.
- APRNs: maintain national certification; APRNs complete at least 5 contact hours related to controlled substances per certification period (medical-cannabis certifiers have added requirements).
