Nebraska Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Nebraska RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
20 contact hours plus 500 practice hours (the most common of several continued-competency options)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; keep certificates at least 4 years for audit. All hours may be home-study/online.
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses expire October 31 of EVEN-numbered years (LPNs in ODD years). Renew online through the Nebraska DHHS portal (opens ~3 months before).
Required & specialty topics
- Meet ONE continued-competency option, e.g.: 500 practice hours in the past 5 years PLUS 20 contact hours of CE in the past 2 years; OR a Board-approved refresher course in the past 5 years; OR current national specialty certification; OR a competency portfolio; OR graduating from a nursing program in the past 2 years.
- Of the 20 hours: no more than 4 may be CPR/BLS, and at least 10 must be peer-reviewed.
- APRNs/NPs who prescribe controlled substances: 3 hours on prescribing opiates (including 30 minutes on the PDMP).
New & first-time renewals
- Nurses who received their RN/LPN license within the past 24 months are waived from the CE requirement for that first renewal.
Good to know
- Nebraska is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
