30 contact hours per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; keep certificates at least 5 years (random audits). You may carry forward up to 15 extra contact hours into the next period.
Renewal Deadline
Licenses expire May 31 every 2 years. Renew online through the Division of Consumer Affairs.
Required & specialty topics
- Prescription opioid drugs: 1 of the 30 hours (covering alternatives to opioids for pain and the risks of abuse, addiction, and diversion), every renewal.
- Organ & tissue donation and recovery: 1 hour, one-time, for nurses whose nursing program / prior CE did not cover it.
- Implicit & explicit bias: 1 hour, if you provide care to pregnant patients.
- End-of-life care: 2 hours (most often cited for APNs — confirm whether it applies to your license type).
Good to know
- APNs must maintain national certification and meet the RN CE requirements; APNs with prescriptive authority complete a one-time 6 hours in controlled-substance pharmacology.
