Renewal Deadline
Your RN license is generally lifetime; the 3-year REGISTRATION is what authorizes you to practice. Re-register every 3 years through NYSED's Office of the Professions.
Required & specialty topics
- Infection Control & Barrier Precautions: NYSED-approved coursework at initial licensure and every 4 years thereafter.
- Child Abuse Identification & Reporting: a one-time 2-hour NYSED-approved course. IMPORTANT — under 2024 amendments to Social Services Law 413, an UPDATED curriculum must be completed by November 17, 2026 by all mandated reporters, including those who already took the earlier training.
- Nurse Practitioners: maintain national certification; NPs who prescribe controlled substances complete at least 3 hours on pain management, palliative care, and addiction every 3 years.
