North Carolina Nursing CE Requirements

30 contact hours per renewal period (the most common of eight continuing-competence options)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; submit evidence only if the Board requests it (audit). Keep your documentation.
Renewal Deadline
License expires the last day of your birth month every 2 years. Renew through the Nurse Portal.
Required & specialty topics
- Complete ONE of: 30 contact hours of CE; OR 15 contact hours + 640 hours of active practice; OR national certification/recertification by a recognized body; OR a Board-approved refresher course; OR two semester hours of post-licensure academic nursing education.
- Or 15 contact hours paired with a qualifying nursing project, a published nursing article, or developing/presenting at least 5 contact hours of CE.
New & first-time renewals
- Continuing competence is required starting with your first renewal after initial licensure — no exemptions.
Good to know
- Nurse Practitioners (APRN-NP) must earn 50 contact hours every 2 years (at least 20 ANCC/ACCME-approved), plus 1 hour for those who prescribe controlled substances.
