24 contact hours per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; the Board conducts random audits. Keep certificates.
Renewal Deadline
License renews on Ohio's biennial cycle (RN licenses expire October 31). Renew before the deadline to avoid lapse.
Required & specialty topics
- At least 1 of the 24 hours must be Category A (approved by the Board, an OBN approver, or an Ohio-headquartered approved provider unit).
- 1 contact hour on recognizing and handling victims of human trafficking or sexual assault.
- Endorsement applicants: 2 contact hours of Category A in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act to become licensed.
New & first-time renewals
- Newly licensed RNs/LPNs do NOT need CE contact hours for their FIRST renewal after passing the NCLEX (you still must renew on time).
Good to know
- One contact hour = 60 minutes, rounded to the nearest quarter hour.
- APRN CE (24 hours) is IN ADDITION to the 24 hours required for the RN license.
