Required Hours
24 contact hours per renewal period (the most common of five "Continuing Qualifications for Practice" options)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birth month
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; keep certificates at least 4 years for audit. Use an OBN-approved or ANCC-accredited provider.
Renewal Deadline
Licenses expire the last day of your birth month in even-numbered years. Renew online (notices go out ~90 days before).
Required & specialty topics
- Meet ONE Continuing Qualifications for Practice option in the past 2 years: 520 work hours in a position requiring a nursing license; OR 24 contact hours of CE; OR current nursing specialty certification; OR a Board-approved refresher course; OR 6 academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at your level or higher.
- APRNs with prescriptive authority (CNP/CNS/CNM): 15 hours of pharmacotherapeutics + 2 hours on pain management or opioid use/addiction; CRNAs need 8 hours of advanced anesthesia pharmacology.

- Non-clinical roles requiring a nursing license (educator, administrator, etc.) count toward the work-hours option.
