Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked; keep certificates about 5 years. Your child-abuse course provider reports completion to the state on your behalf.
Renewal Deadline
The Board assigns each RN an expiration date — RNs/APRNs fall into an April 30 or October 31 group (LPNs renew June 30). Renew through the PALS portal.
Required & specialty topics
- Child abuse recognition & reporting (Act 31): 2 of the 30 hours, every renewal.
- Organ & tissue donation and recovery: 2 hours — NEW effective May 1, 2026 — completed one time within 5 years of initial licensure or licensure renewal, whichever comes first.
- CRNPs with prescriptive authority: 16 of the 30 hours in advanced pharmacology, plus 2 hours in pain management/identification of addiction and 2 hours in prescribing/dispensing opioids.
New & first-time renewals
- Your FIRST renewal after initial licensure is exempt from the 30 hours — but the child abuse recognition & reporting requirement still applies.
Good to know
- Use a Board-approved / ANCC-accredited CE provider. CE for a renewal must be earned during the biennial period immediately before that renewal — hours do not carry over.
