Rhode Island Nursing CE Requirements

10 contact hours per renewal period
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; courses must be approved by the RI Board or a national accreditor (e.g., ANCC). Keep records for audit.
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses expire March 1 every 2 years. Renew online through RIDOH (notices go out ~60 days before). A 6-month CE extension may be granted for hardship.
Required & specialty topics
- Substance Abuse: 2 of the 10 hours every renewal.
- Alzheimer's Disease: 1 hour, one-time per career (effective August 1, 2019).
New & first-time renewals
- Newly licensed nurses are exempt from CE for their first renewal.
Good to know
- Effective January 1, 2024, Rhode Island rejoined the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Prescribers submit 30 hours of pharmacology every 6 years (with added requirements for Schedule II prescribers).
