South Carolina Nursing CE Requirements

30 contact hours per renewal period (the most common of four continuing-competency options)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
CE Broker (official). The Board does not approve individual courses — use a Board-recognized provider. Keep certificates for at least 4 years.
Renewal Deadline
RN/LPN licenses expire April 30 of EVEN-numbered years. There is NO grace period — renew through LLR eServices before the deadline.
Required & specialty topics
- Complete ONE of: 30 contact hours of CE from a Board-recognized provider; OR maintain/renew national certification; OR complete an academic program in nursing or a related field; OR employer verification of competency on a Board-approved form.
- APRNs with prescriptive authority: 20 hours of pharmacology (2 of which cover prescribing controlled substances).
Good to know
- No mandatory CE topics for RNs.
- No grace period: if you miss April 30, your license lapses and you cannot practice until it is reinstated.
