Texas Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Texas RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
20 contact hours per renewal period (OR maintain an approved national certification in your practice area)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birth month
Tracking / Reporting
Self-tracked. NOTE: Beginning September 1, 2026 (Senate Bill 912), nurses must UPLOAD all required CE certificates before renewing.
Renewal Deadline
Renew by the last day of your birth month at the end of your two-year cycle.
Required & specialty topics
- Human trafficking prevention: an HHSC-approved course every renewal (for nurses providing direct patient care).
- Geriatrics: 2 contact hours every renewal if your practice includes older-adult / geriatric populations.
- Nursing Jurisprudence & Ethics: 2 contact hours every third renewal (every 6 years).
- Forensic Evidence Collection: 2 contact hours, one-time, for nurses in an ER setting or who perform forensic exams on sexual-assault survivors.
Good to know
- Texas frames this as "continuing competency" — 20 contact hours OR a current approved national certification satisfies the core requirement.
