30 contact hours OR a practice-hours option (a continued-competency choice)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; keep certificates at least 4 years for audit. Providers must be nationally accredited (ANCC, ACPE, Utah Nurses Association, or DOPL-approved).
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses expire January 31 of ODD-numbered years (LPN/APRN in EVEN years). Renew online through Utah DOPL.
Required & specialty topics
- Satisfy continued competency by ONE of: 30 contact hours of CE; OR 400 hours of licensed practice; OR 200 hours of practice PLUS 15 contact hours of CE — all within the past 2 years.
- Suicide Prevention: complete at least one of DOPL's pre-approved online suicide-prevention trainings each renewal (these carry CE credit).
- APRNs with prescriptive authority: 4 hours in controlled-substance prescribing (3.5 hours of approved education + 0.5 hour DOPL online tutorial).
