Vermont Nursing CE Requirements
Everything Vermont RNs need for license renewal — required contact hours,
renewal cycle, mandatory topics, and the best continuing-education providers, in one place.
Required Hours
20 contact hours OR a practice/certification pathway (a three-way continued-competency choice)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years)
Tracking / Reporting
Self-attested; courses must be from a Board-approved or nationally accredited provider (e.g., ANCC). Keep records for audit.
Renewal Deadline
RN licenses renew every 2 years (commonly March 31 of odd-numbered years). Renew online through the OPR portal (notices go out ~60 days before).
Required & specialty topics
- Meet ONE of three continued-competency pathways in the period before renewal: 20 contact hours of CE; OR practice (400 hours / 50 days in 2 years, or 960 hours / 120 days in 5 years); OR a current Board-approved national nursing certification in your practice area.
- APRNs who prescribe controlled substances: 2 hours of CE on controlled-substance prescribing.
Good to know
- Vermont joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2022.
- Most actively working nurses meet the practice-hours pathway and owe no CE; the 20-hour pathway mainly affects per-diem or recently inactive nurses.
