30 contact hours per renewal period (the most common of several continuing-competency options)
Renewal Cycle
Biennial (every 2 years), tied to your birth month
Tracking / Reporting

Renewal Deadline
License expires the last day of your birth month every 2 years (even-year birthdays renew in even years; odd in odd). Renew online.
Required & specialty topics
- Complete ONE of (per 18VAC90-19-160): 30 contact hours of CE relevant to nursing; OR 15 contact hours + 640 hours of active practice; OR current national specialty certification; OR 3 credit hours of post-licensure academic nursing education; OR a Board-approved refresher course.
- Other options: an evidence-based practice project or research study, a published nursing article, or developing/teaching a qualifying nursing course.
Good to know
- APRNs: maintain national certification OR complete 40 contact hours in the specialty every 2 years; prescribers add 8 hours of pharmacology.
